What is Optoversity Challenge?
[vc_empty_space]

Approaching it’s 8th year, the Out of the Box Optics Optoversity Challenge 2024 (in aid of Vision Care for Homeless People) is the only inter-University competition between optometry students in the UK and ROI.

It is a light-hearted, fun event which tests the students on various aspects of optometry and challenges them to raise funds towards the running of Vision Care for Homeless People’s clinics.

The next event will be held on Sunday 7th April 2024.

Following on from the success of last year’s online event, which had students from 11 universities take part from across all years, we are hosting the competition online (for 1st, 2nd years and 3rd/4th years. The students will face challenges set by Out of the Box Optics according to their year group. Each university team may have an unlimited number of students for the online competition.

Prizes donated by the optical community, will be given for the winning students in each year group and the overall winning team, which last year saw University of the West of England (Bristol) take the title.

Prizes will be given to the highest performers and the highest fund-raisers. In previous years, students have been awarded with prizes such as an iPad, Volk lens, textbooks, vouchers, ophthalmoscope/retinoscope sets, and various optometric equipment.

The fundraising challenge is an integral part of the competition, with each student raising funds towards our clinics. Every student participating in Optoversity Challenge will be given their own fundraising page when they register which they can share with their contacts and ask for donations in support of their fundraising challenge, in the lead up to the competition. Prizes will be awarded to the top three individual fundraisers. Last year over £8,000 was raised through student fundraising and sponsorship.

So what happens on the day?

You will be competing against students in your year group, from universities all across the UK.

Who is running the event?

The hosts of Optoversity Challenge (Out of the Box Optics) are qualified Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians who have a range of specialties and interests and come from different career backgrounds. They have been carefully selected to provide the best training experience for the students.

The registrations for 2024 will be open from winter 2023.

We look forward to welcoming you and your University!
