What is Optoversity Challenge?

Now in it’s sixth year, the Out of the Box Optics Optoversity Challenge 2022 in aid of Vision Care for Homeless People is the only inter-University competition between optometry students in the UK and ROI.

The competition is a light-hearted, fun event which tests the students on various aspects of optometry and challenges them to raise funds towards the running of Vision Care for Homeless People’s clinics.

The event is being held on Sunday 27th February 2022.

Following on from the success of last year’s online event, which had students from 11 universities take part from across all years, we are hosting the competition online once again. The students will face challenges set by Out of the Box Optics according to their year group. Each university team may have an unlimited number of students. Prizes donated by the optical community, will be given for the winning students in each year group and the overall winning team, which last year saw City University take the title.

Prizes will be given to the highest performers and the highest fund-raisers. In previous years, students have been awarded with prizes such as an iPad, volk lens, textbooks, vouchers and various optometric equipment.

The fundraising challenge is an integral part of the competition, with each student raising funds towards our clinics. Every student participating in Optoversity Challenge will be given their own fundraising page when they register which they can share with their contacts and ask for donations in support of their fundraising challenge, in the lead up to the competition. Prizes will be awarded to the top three individual fundraisers. Last year over £8,000 was raised through student fundraising and sponsorship. These funds were used by VCHP to purchase tablets for the clinics, allowing our transition from paper records to an online patient management system. This has streamlined processes in the clinics and improved our service to homeless people.

Each University team has representation from 1st, 2nd and Final year (3rd/4th) students is represented by an unlimited number of students, who will be put to the test on various aspects of Optometry and be asked to demonstrate a range of skills. Successfully passing the tasks will generate points for the team…and points mean prizes!
